A mei tai (
pronounced may-tie) is a simple term for an Asian style baby sling or backpack carrier, which is thought to have originated in China. The "traditional" Mei Tai goes back hundreds of years, usually secured by bringing all the straps together in a twist with the ends tucked.
Today's Mei Tai carriers are generally square or rectangle shaped, with
- Straps on each of the four corners
- Two straps that tie around the babywearer's shoulder
- Two straps that go around the waist
Shoulder straps are generally padded for ultimate comfort.
Mei Tais are becoming very popular in the western world because of their versatility and the comfort they provide. These baby carriers are also economical, as they allow the babywearer to carry the child from birth to toddlerhood.
Most Mei Tais in the US are made by work at home moms (WAHMs) and can be found in a numerous array of styles and prints.
